Access to UMC's Library Resources


As a college in the High School student at UMC you have the same access to the UMC Library's resources as do the faculty and students who access the resources on campus. When you use these materials from your home or high school you may have to log in at the beginning of a session using your assigned username and password. If you have not set up your username and password see the instructions at the bottom of this page.

UMC Library provides wide range of library services to students and faculty. Most useful for those working at a distance are the research databases that can be accessed remotely. For general information about the UMC Library and the services it provides, you can start at the UMC Library homepage

Research Using Online Databases

You will find that two of the large databases are a good places to start your research :

Ebsco MegaFile - EBSCO MegaFILE is a multi-disciplinary database providing full text for nearly 12,000 total publications and indexing & abstracting for more than 16,000 publications. In addition, the database contains more than 84,000 biographies, 86,000 primary source documents, 10,000 company profiles and an image collection of more than 107,000 photos, maps and flags.   Link

Academic OneFile   (Gale) contains nearly 14,000 indexed titles, including more than 10,000 
peer-reviewed journals and more than 6,500 in full-text. It has  extensive coverage of the physical sciences, technology, medicine, social sciences, the arts, theology, literature and other subjects.

Biography in Context  - This database contains biographies from many Gale sources supplemented by full-text articles from hundreds of magazines and newspapers, as well as tens of thousands of images and links to vetted web sites.

Literature Criticism Online  - This is a searchable compilation of articles about authors and their books. Often has extensive biographical information about the author.

Ethnic NewsWatch (ENW)  - An interdisciplinary, bilingual (English and Spanish) and comprehensive full text database of newspapers, magazines and journals from ethnic, minority and native presses.
Google Scholar (Beta) - A Google search engine which indexes peer-reviewed papers, theses, books, abstracts, and other scholarly literature from a variety of academic publishers and professional societies, as well as scholarly articles available across the web. UMC Library has enabled linking to the full text of articles located in Google Scholar using FindIt the UMC Library Linking service.

InfoTrac Student Edition current events, the arts, science, popular culture, health, people, government, history, sports and more. Link

Student Resources in Context -history, literature, science, social studies and selection of reference works and full-text periodicals and newspapers, primary documents, creative works, and multimedia. Link

General Science Collection indexes science journals covering almost every scientific inquiry including developments in particle physics, advanced mathematics, nanotechnology, geology. Link

Points of View Reference Center a full-text database contains a series of essays that present multiple sides of a current issue. The database provides 255 topics, each with an overview (objective background/description), point (argument),counterpoint (opposing argument), and Critical Thinking Guide. Link

Ebsco's MasterFILE Premier contains full text for nearly 1,750 periodicals covering general reference, business, health, education, general science, multicultural issues and nearly 500 reference books, over 164,400 primary source documents, and an Image Collection of over 440,000 photos, maps & flags. Link

GALE'S Expanded Academic ASAPis comprised of more than 3,500 indexed and full-text titles — of which 2,100 are peer-reviewed — in all disciplines with more than 20 years of backfile coverage and offers on topics including social sciences, humanities, education, science and technology.   Link

Ebsco's Academic Search Premier contains indexing and abstracts for over 8,450 journals, with full text for more than 4,650 of those titles with broad coverage in biology, chemistry, engineering, physics, psychology, religion & theology, etc. Link

Ebsco's Business Source Premier is a large business research database, featuring the full text for more than 2,300 journals coverage of business including marketing, management, MIS, POM, accounting, finance and economics. Link

EBSCO GreenFILE focuses on the relationship between human beings and the environment, with well-researched but accessible information on topics ranging from global warming to recycling to alternate fuel sources and beyond. Link

Health Source: Nursing/Academic Edition - provides access to nearly 550 scholarly full text journals focusing on many medical disciplines. Coverage of nursing and allied health is particularly strong. . Link

How do I access these resources from school or home?

   What are the el,databases


The Minnesota Legislature funds online access for Minnesota residents to magazine, journal, and newspaper articles, eBooks (electronic books), and information from other sources.  This access is collected under the name ELM (Electronic Library for Minnesota). There are 45 databases from five vendors in the ELM Databases collection ant these contain:17,000 magazines, with more than 13,000 containing full text and 15,000 electronic books Crookston High School students have access to these databases and the full text articles they contain while on the school network.

UMC Library subscribes to many databases in addition to the el,databases. Many of these are specialized for specific majors like Sports Discus - Criminal Justice Periodicals - Communication & Mass Media Complete - Agricultural Journals - Biological Abstracts - BioOne  - Computer Database -Educator's Reference Complete - MLA International Bibliography In addition the UMC Library subscribes to a number of very large full text journal collections including - IEEE - JSTOR - SpringerLink - Project Muse - Wiley Online Library ScienceDirect. These databases require a UMC username and password for off campus access.

FindIt Linking

The UMC Library also gets access to many more full text articles in the databases listed above. UMC Library is able to link these resources together so that if full text is available in one journal collection or databases it will be available in all the databases. This is a very powerful tool and makes finding the text of an article much easer. FindIt  findIt logo the linking service is only available to students from   off campus who have a UMC username and password (College in the High School).

Getting your UMC username and password

To get your username and password go to www.umn.edu/lookup and type in your name to get your username. After you get that information go to https://www.umn.edu/initiate and enter the information on the form to set your password. Remember that your password must be eight characters or more, have an uppercase letter, a lower case letter AND a number or symbol. It also cannot be part of your name or a dictionary word.
